The Alternatives Research & Development Foundation provides funding and promotion of alternatives to the use of laboratory animals in research, testing, and education. For over 15 years, the Alternatives Research Grant Program has rewarded scientists who have an interest and expertise in alternatives research investigation.

The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, founded in 1787, is the oldest professional medical organization in the country. Twenty-four physicians of eighteenth-century Philadelphia gathered "to advance the science of medicine and to thereby lessen human misery." Throughout its 200 year history, the College has provided a place for both medical professionals and the general public to learn about medicine as both a science and as an art.

The College is home to the Mütter Museum, founded in 1858 to educate future doctors about anatomy and human medical anomalies. The Museum, which will be open during the event, houses an astonishing collection of objects, including:
  • The plaster cast of the torso of world-famous Siamese Twins, Chang & Eng, and their conjoined livers
  • Joseph Hyrtl's collection of skulls
  • Preserved body of the "Soap Lady"
  • Collection of 2,000 objects extracted from people's throats
  • Cancerous growth removed from President Grover Cleveland
  • Tallest skeleton on display in North America
